#checkyourcode is an initiative of Loc8 Code Ltd
Loc8 Code personnel have been involved in Location & Navigation technologies for decades. For some time it has been clear to our experts that, very often, the very 1st time an Eircode might be used is to call an ambulance. This is especially the case for older members of our communities who may not use them for other proposes. As a result of known issues, it is considered too late when calling an ambulance to find out that the code used suffers from one of those issues. Related delays could put Public Safety at risk. The National Ambulance Service has being supporting Loc8 Code alongside Eircode in its emergency response & ambulance navigation systems since late 2017.
So this #checkyourcode site was set up to encourage people to check their codes and, once checked, to Save & Display them on a sign where all can have access to in the event of an emergency.

Eircode
![]() Eircode is applied to all buildings which have a postal address;- i.e. those buildings that are visited by a postman/woman. It points to the building itself and, for apartments, to a spot on the ground floor of the apartment block common to all apartments in that block.
Eircode was launched Nationally in the Republic of Ireland, by the Department of Communications, under a legislative mandate provided in the Postal Act of 2011/15, in April 2014. For reasons specified by An Post, an Eircode cannot be applied to anything other than a building which has a postal address. New Eircodes are initiated by An Post with the allocation of a postal address and the 1st 3 characters of the code. The remainder of the code, the 4 building identifier characters, are allocated by Eircode themselves. An Post must satisfy itself that a new building is in need of a postal delivery service before a postal address and an Eircode can be allocated. This can take several months. Eircode is a business name and trademark of Capital PLC which operates its Eircode service from Clonakilty, Cork. |
